Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Wisconsin

Hospital past due bills

How many years can a collection agency for hospital bills keep asking for payments? Does the debt ever ''go away'' without any more payments? Debt incurred in Wisconsin, now living in Illinois.

Re: Hospital past due bills

The usual statute of limitations for debts based on contract in WI is 6 years. If this is an open account (as most medical bills are) then the statute is extended by any payment. So the statute starts to run from the date of last payment. Once there has been no payment for more than 6 years the debt would normally be barred and would be noncollectable through the court system.
