Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Wisconsin

my husband had some credit card debt before we got married that was never paid and had judgements against him. 7 years ago we hired an attorney's office to get it down some and gave them more than enough to pay it all off. A year later they told us all was well and to come get a check for what was left over.

Fast forward to a month ago, we are looking for houses and find one we like. When we start the loan process we find out he still had two judgements out there. Both are ones the attorney's office was supposed to take care of. This whole time one of the two had been paid off and the paperwork never filed, and the other was never taken care of.

Now the office is supposed to be taking care of this last one, but it's been three weeks. When we call we never get a call back. If this judgment ends up being huge can we hold the attorney's office liable for not taking care of it? They even admitted they messed up.

Second with the lack of communication should we find another attorney?

Three weeks is not necessarily a sign of a major problem, since mailing out correspondence and having the creditor react to it would generally take at least that long. However, you are entitled to reasonable updates, so a followup call, email, or eventually a letter, may be in order. If the amount of the debt in question is small, however, it may not be practical to pay anyone to negotiate it, but rather cheaper to just pay it, so you might also consider that approach, depending upon the amount in question.

Answering this question does not make me your lawyer, and I would normally not do anything else on your case without additional arrangements, although you can ask for clarifications here or also see my past answers to similar questions at http://www.avvo.com/attorneys/53401-wi-jay-nixon-1529181/answers.html?sort=recency.
