Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Wisconsin

sued for medical debt

My girlfriend was diagnosed with lupus a couple years ago. She got sick and was in and out of the ER frequently. She does not have any insurance and didnt then. After many bills came in, the hospital sued her for the money. There is no way she an afford to pay this debt so she did not go to court. What can happen now? What can they legally do to get her to pay this? Are there any assistance plans in place she could take advantage of? She is afraid to even contact anyone from the other side on this because she doesnt know what to tell them. I am trying to get her to do something about it because she is a good person and does not deserve to get in any kind of trouble due to this. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Re: sued for medical debt

Hello,

She could file for bankruptcy and get rid of the judgements. Or if she does not, they could try to collect from her to pay the judgement. If she has assets they could try to get them. If she a job they could try to get part of her wages. If she has no income or assets, they wont be able to get anything and will not be be able to collect.

Best wishes,
