Legal Question in Criminal Law in Wisconsin

I was caught shoplifting at a Wisconsin mall. The police came and issued me a $177 citation, and my court date is not mandatory. The violation is a Class A misdemeanor--can this be expunged? Do I have to show up to court, or would that make things worse?

If the violation was charged as a Class A misdemeanor, the court date is mandatory. If it was charged as an ordinance, it is true that you are not required to appear, but if you fail to appear or otherwise enter a not guilty plea, you will lose by default. There is a mechanism in Wisconsin law to expunged certain convictions, but it only happens under certain circumstances. You should contact a lawyer to determine the best way to proceed.
