Legal Question in Criminal Law in Wisconsin
Embarrassing Crime
After I graduated from college, my mom gave me one of her credit cards to use of course I would be responsible for any charges made. Two years ago my mother passed away. I only used the C.C. a couple of times after she passed away, one being to order two suits for her wake and funeral. A year ago the C.C. company contacted my parents home about the use of the C.C. after the date on my moms death certificate. I panicked and transferred the amount to another C.C. in her name. A few months later the new C.C. sent a letter addressed to my mother, wanting her to verify that the balance transfer was legitimate. I indicated that it was and signed her name. I continued to make the payments toward the balance and never used either card again. The state is taking me to court for fraudulent use of a credit card, a misdemeanor. My dad is in full support. I have retained an attorney and she feels confident out my case. I do not have a criminal record but my court appearance will be in the local newspaper. I am a teacher in the community. I am embarrassed regardless of the outcome of the announcement in the paper will appear as thought I am a criminal. Is there anyway to settle this before the pre-trial hearing?

Avoiding Newspaper Publications for Conviction of Credit Card Crimes
The best way to avoid publication of any conviction in the newspaper (as well as the court system's public website) is to retain an experienced criminal defense attorney. Since you already have one, you should pose this question to her. Many criminal lawyers are willing to provide "second opinions" on any proposed resolution of a case, but only for a fee and after a thorough investigation. Payment of full restitution "up front" in financial crimes can often lead to a better outcome.
