Legal Question in Criminal Law in Wisconsin
how much do lawyers get paid hourly, weekly, and yearly, plus commissions
1 Answer from Attorneys
There are huge variations in attorney income, but is safe to assume that it is probably lower than you might think these days. National reporting on this topic has shown a steady decline in average attorney income in the United States, whether they are in private practice or government service. Attorneys in private practice might charge $200-$500 per hour, they frequently only keep a tiny amount of that money for themselves, after they pay for their secretaries' salaries, technology needs, office rent and expenses and malpractice insurance. If they represent working people, like I do, they have suffered equally from the effects of the Great Recession as their clients have found their ability to pay reduced, along with their income. Starting government attorneys have also suffered as governments have reduced expenses to offset their own reduction in income due to the recession, reducing initial income of many starting public attorneys less than $30,000 annually. Even large firms with corporate clients have suffered highly publicized breakups and bankruptcies this year. .
