Legal Question in Criminal Law in Wisconsin
i live in wisconsin and i recently got a charge of misdemenour theft 1st offense. i wrote out one of my mothers checks for 15.00 over the purchase amount. what might the penaltys be for this?

Misdemeanor theft in WI would normally be a class A misdemeanor; punishable by up to nine months in jail and/or a ten thousand dollar fine. Without knowing more about you and about the offense, I could not begin to speculate what a judge might actually do with you if you are convicted of this. However, if you are not convicted or negotiate a plea bargain involving reduction of the charge to a noncriminal offense, these penalties would not apply to your case. Ordinance violations normally do not carry the possibility of a jail sentence unless you fail to pay your fine as agreed. You therefore need to hire an experienced criminal lawyer as soon as possible to protect your rights.
