Legal Question in Criminal Law in Wisconsin

retail theft

My son had gotten a ticket for retail theft and has a hearing june 27, 2008 he was letting other friends get items for free at the checkout lane where he was a cashier, others had done the same and he thought he would try it too, he is 17 years old, what is he going to be facing, he has no record of anything. what should I do? Do you recommend going before the judge and ask for a public defender, this is his second date for a a hearing, the first one was for pleaing not guilty. need help before next week. thanks

Shoplifting Conviction Impacts on a 17 year old in WI

I would always recommend that anyone facing a retail theft or any criminal charge retain an attorney. Although public defenders are among the most experienced criminal attorneys, they sometimes have such a large case load that they cannot spend much time explaining things to the clients. At age 17 in WI, an adult conviction for shoplifting will have major future impacts upon a person future employability,. It can also effect admission to educational institutions, and even admission to the military, since all WI convictions are publically reported to the word on the internet. You should therefore try to avoid this for your son if at all possible, and hiring experienced legal counsel is the best way.
