Legal Question in Criminal Law in Wisconsin
Shoplifting Plea
I was recently issued a ticket for shoplifting(first offense, no prior criminal record)-the police officer mentioned a plea that I MAY qualify for: I would have to plead guilty to the charges, and the charge would not show on my record; in the event I am ever arrested for anything else in the future, both the shoplifting misdemeanor charge and the new charge would both show up on my record. What is this called, what would the qualifications be (theft value was $380.00) and is this a good idea? I am terrified of this being on my record and having my employer find this out. Also, what type of fine and other punishment should I be prepared for?

Re: Shoplifting Plea
If you are charged with a misdemeanor rather
than an ordinance, there is a provision for
expungement of the record of an offender under
the age of 21 in the WI law. I couldn't possibly
advise you what to do without knowing a lot
more about your case. All court records are
generally open to the public, so secrecy
may be a big problem. Send me a private
e-mail for further details.
