OWI, DUI, Ten Year Old Conviction
A single ten year old drunken driving conviction should have less of an effect upon one's auto insurance rates than a more recent one. However, if there is a new conviction, such a driver faces criminal penalties of up to six months in jail in addition to huge fines, loss of license, and possible vehicle forfeiture, all in addition to outrageous auto insurance rates for decades. Third offense (measured over a person's entire lifetime) is punishable by a year in jail (as is fourth offense). Fifth offense, and subsequent arrests, however, are felonies, generally resulting in "hard time," i.e., years in the state prison system followed by years of supervised release (which supervision time can result in re-incarceration up to the maximum). You should therefore consult with an experienced OWI attorney if you think that you might fall into any one of these multiple offender categories.
