I am very sorry to hear about your mother's death, and equally sad to see you left with this loose end during your grief. However, without reading the "paperwork" you signed, no lawyer could answer your question. But, if it contained language accepting responsibility for her bills, that provision may be enforced after her death. Medicaid payments are also recoverable by the government from her estate, but not necessarily from family members (unless they received significant assets from her through divestment, within roughly six years prior to death, in which event they might attempt to collect from you in some cases). Speak with a local attorney and have him or her read over your documents to get your answer.
