what is the age a child need be to decide which parent they wish to live with?

Legally there is NO specific age. Much depends on the maturity of the child and the specific facts. Judge decides. Attorney for the child recommends.

Never. The courts are generally hesitant to
make the child pick a parent for fear of
causing the child to suffer from guilt later.
On the other hand, if the child communicates
a strong desire on his own to a guardian ad
litem. The older the child, the more seriously
it will be taken. I've heard the age of 12-13
as being significant in past cases
