Legal Question in Family Law in Wisconsin
Paternity
My cousin has been paying child support for 5 years now and he got arrested over the weekend because some judge put a warrent out on him and so he spent a couple of days in jail and I paid the bail to get him out. Child support was verrified through Human Resources at his place of employment and payments are up to date. He has to go to court on Aug 29, 2005 - does he need a lawyer? he can't afford much, where can we find free legal aid or attorney? or can we just go to court by ourselves? We desperately look forward to your response. Thank you.

Re: Paternity
Hello,
It is impossible to give accurate legal advice via the internet. As an example, you do not say what your cousin is going to jail for. If it is for a criminal matter, he may be able to have a public defender represent him. If not, most counties now have very limited access to legal aid services. You could call information in Madison to get the number for the State Bar of Wisconsin to locate the clinic for your area. He can represent himself, that of course is having no lawyer at all. You might try to hire a lawyer just to give you some general guidance or direction. Perhaps you can't afford a lot of money to do the whole case, but you may be able to hire a lawyer for a couple hundred dollars just to give you a couple hours of counsel.
