Legal Question in Family Law in Wisconsin

Placement decisions and length of time before can be changed

We received physical custody of my 15-1/2 year old stepdaughter in November because this is what she wanted and was so unhappy with the situation at her mom's house. We hired an attorney and went through much physical, mental and emotional energy pursuing this because the situation was so poor and we decided we would do whatever it took so that she could be happy. Now my stepdaughter is saying ''she made a mistake'' and wants to go back to live with her mom. We aren't about to do that. What is the length of time before a decision could be legally changed?

There is a statute that says a final custody decree is not to be changed for a year unless there is endangerment of physical or emotional welfare of the child.

A year is not a very long time when dealing with something like this. At the age you describe a child can start running away and become nearly impossible to control. There comes a point where what the law says really does not make a lot of difference. It may depend on how strong willed you are and how strong willed the child is.

Good luck.
