Legal Question in Family Law in Wisconsin

Pre-marital debt

My boyfriend has defaulted on a student loan, owes a credit card co. and has various other debts. If we married, how would his debt effect me? Would my credit be ruined? Would I be held responsible for repaying his debts as his wife at any time?

Re: Pre-marital debt

You are not responsible for your boy friends debt after marriage. However, your credit may be effected. In most states property owned by a married couple can be classified as tenants by entirities. In the eyes of the law this is a legal entity that is different than the individual husband and the individual wife. Property owned as tenant by entirities is considered as belonging to a third person and could not be attached for collection of an individual debt of either the husband or wife. Suggest you consult with local legal counsel to clarify some fine points of what I have written about.
