Spouses are NOT generally liable for each other�s debts acquired BEFORE marriage, but they ARE generally liable for each other�s necessaries incurred WHILE married which includes medical bills. The primary statute involved is �766.55 Obligations of spouses. The statute defines what assets/income of the spouse that creditors can reach. Spouses also owe each other a duty of support. So, there is certainly a probability that (in the absence of great health insurance) that the spouse could have some, perhaps significant, liability for debts and support caused by an illness.
