Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Wisconsin

lost and found item

A friends' boyfriend recently bought a ring off the street for $800. After getting it appraised her and her boyfriend were told the ring was worth over $6,000. The same day she told me this I stumbled across an ad in the papaer with the description of the ring asking that it be returned...it was lost at a local fair. I called the number, without the friends knowledge to see if the ring belonged to the couple and it did. I've asked my frined to consider returning it, but she and her boyfriend are not willing. The owner of the ring thinks that I have the ring. Am I legally responsible for the ring? Is there a law that says it must be returned? He has asked that I give him her number to be contacted. Do I have to? Can he get police involvement now that he has my number and knows that I have information about the ring?

The answer to all of your questions is "yes." The law requires you to do everything possible to see to it that lost or stolen property is returned to its lawful owner. If you fail to do so, you could face personal liability in many different forms.
