When representing ourselves in a small claims case do we have the right to call and talk with the witnesses to prepare for trial?

You certainly have the right to contact witnesses, meet with them, and prepare with them. You will also have the right to subpoena them for trial to testify. Be careful though in that the other side or their attorney may have a right to ask the witnesses about you conversations and preparations with them.
