Your lawyer should investigate right away and attempt to settle the case by negotiating an out of court settlement with the owner of the damaged car. I am guessing that this is a nonreportable accident due to a small damage amount, but if potentially otherwise, you son should also report it to the police as soon as possible, which might tend to avoid hit and run charges, in addition to paying for the damages promptly. If your son has insurance, he also needs to report the accident immediately to the insurer or risk losing coverage.
Remember that I am only guessing here because I have not seen your paperwork, so have a private consultation with a lawyer for review of the docs before you act on my suggestions.
