New Roommate refusing to pay back security deposit

My boyfriend and his brother rented an apartment together with a one year lease. After that time, they continued on a month-by-month basis. Then, his brother decided he wanted his ex-wife to move back in. Without consulting my bf, they moved her into the apartment. they did not notify the landlord a third person was living on the premise. My bf was concerned this may impact him negatively so he offered to notify the landlord and split the utilities and rent 3 ways - she refused to pay anything because she was 'only living in his brothers part of the apartment.' Rather than start a family argument, my bf he gave his 30 days notice and moved out. The company that he was renting through said the reimbursement of his security deposit is between him and the ex, since she essentially took over his part of the contract. She refuses to pay anything saying it was his choice to move out. Is there any way to force her to pay him back for the security deposit? He lost money in the move because he now lives alone and pays more than he did when he shared the apartment with his brother. I would hate to see him lose the money he had deposited simply because she refuses to pay up and he doesn't want start a family feud.
