Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Wisconsin
A year and a half ago I moved in with my bosses, sister in law. Month to month rent. No lease. It was fine for a few months until she developed a crush. I declined her advances and that's when things got bad. Bad enough to where the landlord (her dad) said I didn't have to pay last month's rent if I left, making it easier for me to find a new place. I just contacted him now asking for information when I lived there for a housing application. He says I owe him money. Do I? He couldn't give me dates when I moved in, or out.

Good references from past landlords are often essential when you are looking for new housing. However, the ex landlords hold "all the cards" if you are depending upon them for this service, meaning that you will have to make good on all past obligations to them if you want a favorable report. My advice would be to pay what he wants, since you do not appear to have anything in writing waiving the last month's rent. Even if you did have such a written waiver, there would be no guarantee of a good reference.
My answer does not automatically make me your attorney, so you need to consult with your own attorney before acting upon any of my comments and may contact my office at 333 Main St, Racine, WI 53403, 262-633-3090, during business hours, or see me on the web at www.jayknixonlaw.com. or past online answers at the following links: https://www.lawguru.com/answers/attorney_control_panel/answered , or at http://www.avvo.com/attorneys/53401-wi-jay-nixon-1529181/answers.html?sort=recency.
