Legal Question in Military Law in Wisconsin
Looking for an Honorable Discharge
My bf has been in the army for about 6 months and absolutely hates it. Hes severely depressed and even becomes suicidal at times because hes so homesick. Hes talked to people about this and the psychiatrist on base put him on an anti-depressant a few days ago and said to see if it helps. He said if not, theyd try another prescription if he wanted, otherwise theyd chapter him. He was told it would be honorable and would still get his benefits.Hes worried about actually benefiting from the Montgomery GI Bill since he hasnt paid in $1200 to it or something, and about how it would look on his record to be discharged for mental reasons. Are these worries justified? Also, if the paperwork for him to be discharged is still being processed while his unit is deployed overseas, will he be sent overseas? It would also be very helpful if you could suggest any other HD options or sources where I could research them. Thank you for your time.

Re: Looking for an Honorable Discharge
He should focus on getting better, and working with his doctor to get the right medication for his condition. The rest will take care of itself. It is what it is. The GI Bill benefits will be whatever they are. The medical reasons for his separation will be what they are. If his doctor determines that he is non-deployable, he will not deploy. There is nothing you can do to assist him. The Army will do whatever is necessary to treat him, and if he does not improve, the Army will discharge him. Back to the original point. All of the other questions don't matter. What matters is that he gets good treatment and that his condition improves.
