Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Wisconsin
bogus lawsuit
I live in Chicago Illinois, and I'm 17 years old. Me and my friends decided to rent a house for New Year's 2003 in Wildcat Lake, Wisconsin for three days. I called and talked to some guy(not the owner) who was renting out the house and he told me that it would be $1100 for three days for 11 people($100 each). The owner is some guy who lives in England and this is his vacation house. We went there, he didnt ask us for any deposit, he just said $1100, we gave him the money cash, he didnt give us a receipt, and we NEVER SIGNED ANY CONTRACT. WE STAYED ONLY FOR ONE NIGHT AND LEFT ON EMERGENCY. 3 MONTHS LATER I GET A LETTER FROM A UNITED KINDGDOM(ENGLISH) LAWYER THAT I AM BEING SUED FOR $10,802 FOR DAMAGES THAT WE'VE NEVER DONE.
FOR EXAMPLE: $2000 FOR RE-PAINTING HIS WALLS BECAUSE THE HOUSE HAD BEEN SMOKED IN FOR A DAY.. AND:$1700 FOR A PLANE TICKET FOR HIM TO COME TO THE UNITED STATES AND ''ASSES THE DAMAGES'' AND OTHER THINGS LIKE THIS TOTALING $10,802.
MY QUESTION IS:
1. Can I be sued since I'm 17 and underage?
2. Can I be sued when theres no contract or not any way for him to prove that me and my friends were ever there?
3. Can he sue me for all of this stuff when Im not responsible for it?

Re: bogus lawsuit
The first thing I'd do is tell this schmuck (this is a family website, so I can't use the word I'd really like to use) that he very well may be practicing law without a license. In addition, it is clear, even from the limited facts you've presented that he has violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in several respects. In fact, if you'd like, I'd be happy to send this upper class twit a letter outlining the hot water he could be in--no charge. I was 17 once, but of course I didn't have $100 to spend on a cabin....
