Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Wisconsin

name change on mortgage

I recently changed my name and have taken all the necessary steps except changing my name on my home and vacation home morgages. How do I go about doing this? Do I need a quit claim deed? What steps are involved?

Thank you,

Re: name change on mortgage

Unless you have a special reason to do so, you do not have to change the name on your mortgages or on your deeds. If you later sell or refinance the properties you can use an a/k/a of f/k/a designation to identify that you with with your new name is the same as the you with your former name.

If you do make any changes make sure you change everything: the deed, the mortgage, the name on the tax roll and the name on your insurance policy.

If you wanted to do something now to acknowledge your new name you might consider recording an affidavit of identity. It must be in recordable form and you should refer to each of the documents of record where you former name is listed. You might be able to get help doing this through the company that wrote your title insurance policy.
