Legal Question in Traffic Law in Wisconsin

alcohol consumption

We are taking a rented RV from Milwaukee, WI, to Washington, DC, and I was wondering what the laws are regarding alcohol consumption while the RV is en route? Would the laws vary by state? Are they the same laws that govern alcohol consumption while operating any vehicle?

Drinking and Driving in Recreational Vehicles

WI treats power boats, snowmobiles and recreational vehicles exactly the same as cars for purposes of drunken driving and similar violations. My guess is that there would be exceptions to onboard consumption rules if the passenger compartment were sufficiently separated from the driver's area (and assuming, of course, that the driver is not also drinking). I am not familiar with the laws of other states in this regard. There are ways to consume alcohol legally in commercial buses and other common carriers but this usually with a hired vehicle and a paid professional driver who carries a CDL (commercial drivers license). Setting up such an arrangement with a rental vehicle for a single trip sounds like a lot of trouble, but is probably doable. You might also wish to discuss this with any established company in the business of hiring out vehicles with drivers included.
