Legal Question in Traffic Law in Wisconsin
Insurance filing and Citations
I have a driving record that is filled with speeding tickets and one accident. I am to carry an SR22 filing. I thought that I was insured, had all the proper papers filed. I was pulled over in January and when my license came back to the officer it was revoked. I was unaware that my SR22 filing was not current. I had not been notified of my licence being revoked because of it. Needless to say, I paid the fines. I was playing a bit of Russian Roulett and drove to work in June. I was still, at this point, unable to become re-insured. I was pulled over due to expired license plates - I was waiting for them to come in the mail. I was issued another citation. 2nd offense. My question is - what do I do? I was not notified of my liscence was revoked. Is there any way I can get this figured out? Or am I just in trouble and have to pay the fines and have this added to my record? Thank you for your time - J Gott

Re: Insurance filing and Citations
Dear Mr. Gott:
Under no circumstances should you plead to
any of the operating after revocation tickets.
Most jurisdictions can be convinced (by a good
attorney) to dismiss them or amend them to
"no pointers" if you show up in court with a
reinstated license. An attorney can also
generally get you some added time to get reinstated
as well as get the old convictions reopened.
These "OAR" convictions are devastating to your
driving records and insurance, to say nothing
of being just plain unnecessary. The worst
impact by far is that after enough of them, you
become a "Habitual Traffic Offender", which
carries a five year revocation of all operating
privileges, including CDL, chauffeur's and occupational
licences.
