Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Wisconsin

How to find out what a probate does

My father passed away recently and his estate is now in probate. I haven't had contact with him for a few years and he remarried in that time. Can I go to the probate hearings and request to be included in his estate? How exactly does this work?

Re: How to find out what a probate does

Hello,

If your father's estate is in probate, that is a public record. You can go the Register of Probate's office in your county and ask to see the probate file. That will tell you who is the personal representative of the estate. That person should keep you informed of what is going on. Also, there may be a lawyer doing the estate legal work. If so, write, call or set a meeting with the attorney to get informed. If that fails, hire a lawyer yourself just to help you obtain and understand the process.
