false copyright claims

i have been trying to track down the current owner of certain copyrighted software. However, someone has come forward stating that he owns all the copyrights to the software produced by said companies when in fact I believe he is not the current copyright holder and or copyright owner nor has this person provided any proof other than a bill of sale which does not specify any software for which i was seeking. what legal action does this person have if all this person provided was a bill of sale mentioning software developed by another company (a 3rd unrelated company) and only portions of software for an application for the second mentioned company that was already previously developed by the first company ?

Re: false copyright claims

If you infringe on a copyright (which you admittedly do not own) you may be sued for infringement by the true owner, who will need to establish ownership to prevail.
