being named executor to a will

my husband was named executor in my dad's will. my dad is in bad shape, can we have the lawyer who drew up the will become the executor, without dad changing his will, we don't want to be involved

No. The will must be amended to provide for a new executor or personal representative. The device by which this is done is called an addendum, should be prepared by a lawyer, and will have to be approved and signed by the testator [will-maker]. Often wills provide for an alternate executor should the first named be unable/unwilling to serve. Have you checked the will for such a provision?
