Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Can an ID be demanded for Credit Card Authentication

Lately, I have noticed that merchants have started demanding an ID before accepting a Credit Card. Is this legally tenable? I feel that the signature on the back of the card is the only valid authentication mechanism and merchants have no right to demand an ID. This does reduce the convenience of a Credit Card.
