Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Is it considered defamation of character if a newspaper article was written about me being arrested and found in possession of the goods they were looking for (which no goods were in my possession) and i haven't even been to court yet?

It is not defamatory if they state you were arrested and you were in fact arrested. There is no requirement that a newspaper wait for court proceedings to report on a criminal matter. As to the goods being in your possession, this seems like a he said she said matter, and you should be more focused on defending the criminal charges.
