Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Notice to Vacate Property

We had a lease. The owner found out about a sublease we had and decided to lease the property to the sub. The sub then allowed us to utilize the property without a rental agreement, nor payment for a year. Last week, they asked us to vacate the property. Legally, how long do we have to move? How soon can they lock us out? And is it legal for them to move our property on the premises without our permission?

Re: Notice to Vacate Property

You must vacate after receiving a 30 day notice.

They cannot lock you out, and cannot move your property.

Re: Notice to Vacate Property

It sounds like you are tenants at will (at the will of the sublessees). You would probably be entitled to 30 days notice to vacate. After 30 days you would be in unlawful possession of the premises and could be evicted.
