Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Cleanup of common area in rental complex

I received a letter from the management company for the building where I rent an apartment. Some of the neighbors have placed furniture on a publicy accessible sundeck in the common area. The letter claims that this is a violation of the lease, and tenants in the apartments nearest the furniture must remove them or be charged. I have nothing to do with this furniture and I fail to see how I can be held accountable for a situation that I 1. Did not create, and 2. Had no power to prevent. I was wondering if the landlord is just blowing smoke or if I do have a legal obligation to clean up after my neighbors in a common/freely accessible location.

Re: Cleanup of common area in rental complex

The landlord probably sent the letter to every tenant because he didn't know whose furniture it was.

Re: Cleanup of common area in rental complex

The landlord is responsible for maintaining the common area and the tenants are respossible for cleaning up the property they placed there. I recommend that you contact the management company in writing and explain what you have posted here and post an update to your question when they respond.
