Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

How would I legally refuse to be the executor of a family members estate, when he left no will and his wife is still alive, but not aware of anything? I live in Arizona but the legal matters are taking place in California.

sign a formal notice that you decline to act and send by certified mail to the wife (or her conservator, if any) and the next successor Trustee.
