Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Colorado

Medical Debt

In 2004 I took my daughter to the Dr. I paid for that bill. In 2007 her dad (we are divorced) took her to the same dr for surgery. He signed all paperwork. He didnt pay it and now they have sent me to collections. Am I liable?

Re: Medical Debt

I have not researched it lately and I don't know what you may have signed with regard to the earlier medical services, but in general I believe a parent may be held liable for the necessary medical expenses of a minor child; however, I think the medical provider runs a risk if they have provided negative credit info about you to a credit reporting agency without first obtaining a judgment against you. If the collection agency has filed suit, you should consult an attorney. You may also wish to consult a divorce attorney to review your divorce papers and help advise you on what rights you may have against your ex.
