Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

My father has a high medical debt and the collection agency is stating that they will force my parents with refinancing the house or getting a loan in order to pay off the debt. My parents are barely making the monthly payments right now on the mortgage, and I am sure they would not be able to afford the new mortgage if they refinance the house or any costs that go along with that. They have tried to make payment arrangements, but they are not being cooperative.

What can they do?
