Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

my son lives with his father (he has primary residential custody and i have secondary residential custody) and he wants to live with me. his father neglects him and smokes pot in the house with my son there. my son lives in florida and i live in rhode island. also my son's father denies me my visitation frequently and he refuses to make any kind of agreement with me regarding living arrangements for my son. he tells me i have to fight him in court. is there anything i can do to gain custody of my son.
