My wife has a 25, 000 student loan. If we divorce, am I liable and for how much of the loan?

As a general rule, a person is not responsible for a spouse's student loan, even if incurred during the marriage. There are some exceptions, though. For instance, if a student loan is incurred during the marriage and the degree was used to start a business and the spouses are splitting the business.

If the loan was incurred before the marriage, the loan is almost never split.
