Legal Question in Personal Injury in Florida

I was involved in a car accident in Florida. It was not my fault. I was injured and sued in a courthouse. They voted against me. Now the other insurance company is coming after me for their court costs of $21,000. How can this happen? I had no idea that they could come after me. I was never advised of this and feel this is totally wrong. I was hurt and now I have to pay $21,000.00? Please help me. Thank you

You must have had an attorney. Did he provide you with "Statement of Clients Rights"? Warn you of the penalty if you lost the case?

Unfortunately the Florida law does provide the Defendant with the right to claim costs and in some cases for their attorneys fees.

You need to speak to an attorney if your assets are not subject to the judgment or you might consider filing for bankruptcy.

Unfortunately, that is one of the risks of filing a lawsuit. Your attorney absolutely should have told you. I agree with Mr. Tobin, you will want to seek debtor's or bankruptcy council. I would be happy to recommend one who would charge a reasonable rate. If you are interested, please get in touch with me. 305-931-6666.
