Time to start counting accets

My father left me stock. When can I start tracking the stock as mine, do I use the date of his death or wait for probate?

When you say that he 'left' it to you, how in fact did he leave it to you? Was it willed, or did the stock have some sort of beneficiary designation? Or did your father not have any heirs to his estate?
