Legal Question in Medical Leave in Georgia

Paternaty Leave!

The company I work for just took over for another company. All employees were re-hired as if new hires. I have been employed in my field in this state for more than two years.

My wife is pregnant and I would like to take some time off when our first child is born. What are the FMLA benefits for fathers? and how do I go about filing for them?

If your employer is covered (generally, it must have 50 or more employees in your location) and you have been with the company for 12 months and worked at least 1250 hours within that time period, you are entitled under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a newborn child. The employer is required to return you to your job or a virtually identical position upon your return to work. If you qualify for FMLA leave, it does not matter whether you are male or female. You would request the FMLA leave from your employer--typically the human resources department. They should be able to provide you with the necessary paperwork.
