Legal Question in Constitutional Law in Illinois
Hi!
I would like to know what exactly is meant by the following sentence in the oath of US Citizenship:
" that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same" (i.e., the laws and constitution of the US)
I understand that one is supposed to abide by the law, and this I have no problems with, but does "bearing true faith" carry connotations that go over and above simply being a law-abiding citizen? How exactly have legal experts understood this phrase as it applies to the oath of allegiance?

It's just a fancy way of saying you have to obey the law.
