Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

I have a Hospital bill that is now in collections. It is like pulling teeth to get my account balance from them when ever I inquire. And when I do get it, it's in the mail hand writen on paper.

Is there any legal way I can get a receipt after every payment and my account balance from them?

Frankly once they have given you a balance, if you keep records of your payments from that date why do you need anything more. you should pay by check so you can obtain a copy of the cancelled check. It is difficult to get copies of cashed money orders.
