Ex owes me money

Loaned my ex over $10,000 over 3 year period, to help him pay for lawyer for his child custody case. We broke up over a year now he has promised to pay me the money back, $500 a month, I received only one payment in May 2008. What are my chances of getting money back in court, he did not sign anything but I can prove with withdrawals form my account and payment for airline tickets. I sent him certified letter in the mail requesting him to make good on his word and respond by 10th Feb, he has not responded. What can I do now?

If he refuses to pay, your only option is to sue him in small claims court. The burden will be on you to show that this was a loan, not a gift. The fact that he made a payment to you is a helpful bit of evidence.
