biological father been in prison since daughter was a month old

my ex-husband which is sex offender in the state of mo. he has a long line of crimes from battery to domestic abuse here in the state of ks. we were divorced back in 2002 after i had my son to my current husband. my ex went back to prison when our daughter was a month old and i met my husband when she was 7 months old, he is the only father she knows, how would i go about doing a step parent adoption for this situation my ex has anouter 5 years in prison, my daughter will be 8 this dec.
