Legal Question in Family Law in Kansas

Changing a minor's last name

Can I change my daughters last name to mine if her father's name is not even on her birth certificate? She is 14 and wants to have the same last name as myself and her step-father. She has the last name I had at the time of having her. Also she was born in Nebraska but we live in Kansas now. How do we go about changing her last name and do we have to go to court to have this done?

Re: Changing a minor's last name

You would need to file a petition for a name change in the county where you live. This is done through the district court. You may also be required to do a publication notice so that anyone could object if they wanted. Usually the only person that would object would be the natural father.
