Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Kentucky

Found CD of deceased mother

While cleaning out my father's house (he inherited it from his mother) he found a 20 year old Certificate of Deposit ($15,000.) on a bank that no longer exists (Harlan Bank and Trust).

We do not know how to cash this CD in, since the bank no longer exists, and the CD is in my grandmother's name.

Thank you for any assistance.

Re: Found CD of deceased mother

I believe that Harlan Bank and Trust became BB&T (Branch Banking and Trust). Have the executor of the estate take the cerificate to the bank and see if it is valid. It may very well have been redeemed. People lose certificate or cannot find them and certify to the bank that they will surrender it when found but are able to go ahead and withdraw the money or do something else with it. In other words, the deposit may have already been redeemed. Doesn't hurt to find out.
