Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

Gym Membership Debt Suing...

My mother (in MD) has been served with papers referencing a gym membership that my ex husband signed up for using my name (I approved at the time). The court date is next month, but I no longer live in MD. It has been only a few months (around 4) since I made my last payment on this bill, and no one has contacted me about attempting to continue paying. Is there any way I can avoid having to fly back for this court date just to tell the judge that I don't have the money? I really don't want my pay attached, I'm living rather frugally now.

Wages can't be garnisheed in Texas for a consumer debt. Get the name and phone number of the attorney who filed the lawsuit, call, and see if you can arrange a payout to compromise and settle the debt.
