Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Children's rights

What will happen to children of a single mother? There's 3 children, ages, 5,7,and 9. All three children have different fathers. Would Maryland law split this brother and his two sisters up, if something happens to the mother?

Re: Children's rights

There is no pat answer to your question. A lot depends on the ongoing relationship each child has with his/her father. If it's strong and ongoing, the father would probably be awarded custody if he seeks it under the circumstances you present. If there are other adults who have a close relationship with all 3 children and seek to become custodians, they might get it in the absence of competing claims from the fathers. The bottom line is that a court must decide what is in the best interest of the children.
