Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

funeral expense

My sister-in-law said that those that have a job in the family should pay for the funeral expenses for their parent. There is no life insurance. My husband is the only person in the family that has a steady job. Is it fair? Should I pursue legal action against my husband's family if they make my husband pay? Please advise. Thanks.

Re: funeral expense

If the parent had any property to speak of, an estate should be opened, and whoever pays funeral expenses can be reimbursed before the rest of the estate assets are divided among the heirs. No one can "make" your husband pay, but someone is going to have to sign papers with the mortuary, and that person will be responsible. Those that refuse to participate cannot be held directly responsible.
